Starting with power generation, we have expanded the range of our technologies to include electronics and ceramics technologies, meeting the needs of society as it changes over time.

In our electronics business, we focus on plastic packaging, printed circuit boards and related products, while in the ceramics field, we concentrate on DPF and special carbon products. In every field of endeavor, we take the initiative to pioneer technological innovation while collaborating with other leading global companies.

    Challenges We Face

    The social issue of health risks brought on by global warming due to carbon dioxide and other gases, as well as micro-particles such as PM2.5, has become a sincere concern.
    The Automotive Functional Component Development Center conducts R&D to provide solutions to prevent environmental damage and health risks due to pollution by cleaning air polluted by exhaust gas from automobiles.

    Goals & Motivations

    Use of electric motors in vehicles is increasing rapidly throughout the world. Hybrid vehicles (HV), which combine engines and batteries as seen in plug-in hybrid vehicles and range extenders, are expected to make up the majority of all vehicles in the future.
    As the number of HVs increase, we will see a decrease in emissions of harmful gases that cause damage to our health: carbon dioxide which causes global warming, a concern of the entire world, and air-borne particles (PM2.5). Nevertheless, these harmful gas emissions will not diminish to zero.
    The Automotive Functional Component Development Center leverages its expertise accumulated through developing SiC-DPF and SCR carriers, namely, forming, pore-forming and sintering technologies, to cleanse emission gas from vehicles and remove suspended particles from the air, thus conducting new product development based on our mission of "cleaning the earth's polluted air."

    Challenges We Face

    While electric vehicles are becoming more popular, the lack of driving range enabled per charge is very limiting. Significant improvements in performance are required before we see an increase in practical use.
    At the same time, the lack of noise generated by electric vehicles ultimately emphasizes other driving-related noises, such as the sound created by friction between the tires and the road.
    Furthermore, vehicles require heat or energy to run the air conditioner and warm up engine oil. With electric vehicles, there is no engine-generated heat, so new sources of electricity must be found.

    The Next-Generation Mobility Product Development Center leverages IBIDEN's 100-years' worth of expertise in controlling physical properties of various materials to respond to various changes. We focus on product developments that make future vehicles more efficient and more comfortable.
    We continue to offer technologies that reduce the weight of mobility products and increase battery performance and efficiency, ultimately achieving our goal of improving overall vehicle efficiency. We work with all types of materials, both organic and inorganic, exploring new ways of creating added value and contributing to higher efficiency.
    We offer technologies that enhance a vehicle's interior environment, such as noise reduction, further reaching our goal of improving the comfort of vehicles. We develop electronic components using technologies acquired in our electronics business to make autonomous vehicles even more comfortable.
    By combining products and technologies developed at the Next-Generation Mobility Product Development Center, we are discovering technologies for vehicles of the future previously only envisioned in books and movies.     Unbreakable, strong, light, and high-temperature resistant ceramic materials

    Challenges We Face

    Concerns over a fossil fuel shortage are causing people to worry about increased fuel prices in the future. Technologies that enable lower fuel consumption are needed to generate more energy from less fuel.
    At the same time, protection of the global environment is mandatory. While clean engines emitting smaller amounts of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are necessary, it is essential that we attain environmentally-friendly technologies that generate more energy from less fuel.
    The Advanced Ceramic Material Development Center is developing SiC/SiC composite materials to enable commercialization of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) that is expected to make a significant contribution to improve fuel consumption of aircraft engines and to reduce exhaust gas emissions.

    The Advanced Ceramic Material Development Center is developing SiC/SiC composite materials by combining IBIDEN's proprietary core technologies accumulatively developed in our ceramics business, including SiC and graphite sintering and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technologies.
    Technologies accumulated in nuclear energy and aerospace fields will continue to contribute to both the prosperity of the world economy and environmental protection through continued development of material and composite material technologies.

    Improving reliability, safety, and quality of foods and living spaces

    Challenges We Face

    World-wide food shortages due to increasing population is forecasted. Securing the food supply will be a major issue in the future.
    Japan faces a rapidly aging population. We must improve our healthy life expectancy, ensuring a healthy life for all seniors.
    The worsening global environment threatens the loss of clean spaces where people can live a healthy life. The situation calls for action to be taken to secure healthy living spaces.

    Goals & Motivations

    The Bio-Material Product Development Center leverages nanoscaled material handling technology as well as water treatment technology gleaned through IBIDEN electronics business activities to develop bio-material products that provide solutions toward future food shortages due to the world's increasing population and improved healthy life expectancy in an aging society.
    Fermentation metabolites (plant nutrient) using IBIDEN's proprietary microbes nurtured with our water treatment technology makes plants stronger (less susceptible to disease) and increases yields (bigger and more fruit) due to the growth promotion effect. Furthermore, with a technology to reduce the molecular size of organic polymers using only water, based on our water treatment technique, we can convert healthy components (organic polymers) in foods to a size more easily absorbed by the human body. Additionally, our functional composition extraction technology increases health-promoting compositions in foods, enabling those compositions to be absorbed by the human body more efficiently.
    IBIDEN's nanoscaled material handling technology has been extended to develop anti-virus space design technologies where the infection risk of residence-based viruses (such as influenza virus, norovirus, and O-157), is significantly reduced. The technology makes it difficult for germs to cling to locations often touched by people, thus greatly protecting seniors and small children from health risks.
    The synergistic effect of these products and technologies developed at the Bio-Material Product Development Center will help alleviate global food shortages, extend the healthy life of the seniors, reduce health cost burdens on young people, and accelerate the realization of a bright and happy society in the future.
